At Destin Vacation Boat Rentals, we are often asked about Shell Island, which is located 47-miles east in Panama City Beach. While Destin doesn't have a Shell Island, we DO have the famous Crab Island. So, what’s the difference between Shell Island and Crab Island? Let’s take a closer look:
Crab Island
Crab Island is not actually an island at all. Decades ago, it was a small landmass near the mouth of Destin’s East Pass. Over time, the swift-moving currents eroded the land and transformed it into a submerged sandbar. Today, Crab Island is a shallow-water gathering spot, popular with boaters between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Accessible only by boat, Crab Island offers waist-deep water and—at high tide—crystal-clear visibility. It’s one of the top things to do in Destin and a great place to relax, snorkel, paddleboard, or float the day away. Most visitors get there via boat rental, but there are also shuttle services and excursions available for those who prefer to ride as a passenger. For full details on how to get there, check out our guide to Crab Island access.
Because it is located in open water, safety is important. We recommend reviewing boating guidelines from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission before heading out.
Shell Island
Shell Island is a true barrier island located just off Panama City Beach in St. Andrews Bay, roughly an hour’s drive from Destin. It's part of a protected area near Gulf Islands National Seashore, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers.
Unlike Crab Island, Shell Island is undeveloped and quiet—no restaurants, no shops—just unspoiled nature. You can explore by renting a boat, booking a Shell Island Shuttle, or taking a guided tour. Popular activities include snorkeling, fishing, beachcombing, and dolphin watching. While its name might suggest otherwise, Shell Island is not known for abundant shells, but it is home to one of the largest populations of bottlenose dolphins in the world, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Be sure to pack everything you need for the day, as there are no services available on the island. It's also a good idea to check weather conditions before departing.
Which One Should You Choose?
If you’re looking for a lively, social experience with lots of boats, shallow water, and floating vendors, Crab Island is your best bet. But if you prefer a more natural, quiet setting for exploring and wildlife viewing, Shell Island is worth the short drive. Both offer something special, depending on the type of day you’re looking to have on the water.
