June 2014 Fishing Report - Destin Vacation Boat Rentals

Hello, anglers! June has been a great month for fishing, whether you are hitting the grass flats of the back bay for speckled trout or reds, fishing the wrecks and reefs offshore for red snapper, or trolling for kings. The weather has been mostly cooperative and the silt has settled from all of the rainfall we had in the spring, once again giving us our beautiful emerald green waters back! Water temps are up and the fish are biting in Destin. Here is our latest Destin fishing report for June 2014:

Offshore

The red snapper debate was huge this year as the Feds enacted an unheard-of 9-day red snapper season in federal waters. Thankfully, the state of Florida opened state waters (up to 9 miles offshore) from May 24-July 14th, so those of us with state licenses or recreational fishermen (renters included), can still enjoy the the tasty fish. Red snapper have been the primary target this month, with most trips reaching their 2 per person limit, as well as kingfish. Federal boats that can’t target red snapper right now are bringing in kings, tuna, and some mahi as well.

Inshore

The flats are full of life! There are lots of slot sized and bull reds and some very nice sized trout to be had in the back bay right now, and bait is everywhere, making for some excellent fishing inshore.

Forecast

Red snapper will remain the primary focus for rental boats and state-licensed charter boats through mid-July. Greater amberjack and triggerfish re-open August 1st, so there will still be plenty of fishing to do done!

As always, if you’d like to get in on the action, be sure to book a charter with one of our captains or, for the more experienced fishermen, try a fishing boat rental for the day. We also offer fishing pole and tackle rentals, and have bait and tackle for sale in our ship’s store. Contact us for more information!
